WHAT IS A LAVA SHELL MASSAGE?
Tiger clam Lava Shells first reached the UK in 2009. Natural Tiger Clam shells are from the Philippines and are composed of calcium carbonate. The clams are collected by local free-divers and the shells are removed so the clams can be prepared for food. The porcelain Lava Shells are handcrafted and hand painted to replicate the luster and appearance of the natural shell. The shells are smooth and non-porous so they will not absorb bacteria, massage oils or dead skin cells. This makes them more hygienic and easier to clean. These shells are the world's first self heating massage tool. With the heat coming from lava minerals (a patented blend of magnesium, iron and salt) that simply activates with water to create an exothermic reaction will continue to generate heat which can last up to 90 minutes.
What to expect from a Lava Shell Massage
Lava Shells are heated by a single use disposable mineral sachet. Your therapist will insert the contents of the sachet into the shell alongside room temperature water to activate the shell. It takes on average 5 minutes for the shell to reach a temperature of 44-53c. Your therapist will begin the treatment by applying massage oil to help make the strokes smoother. Using the three parts of the shell :
Crown - the large, smooth, flat part of the shell. It transmits the greatest amount of heat. The crown is ideal for long broad effleurage strokes across major muscle groups, especially either side of the spine, over the calves and thighs and around the neck and shoulders. Tilting the crown slightly offers a deeper pressure.
Hinge - forms a small rounded bump on the side of every shell. It is used to work deep into small tight knots or problem areas. Its ideal to use for friction work to ease out tight knots or problem areas.
Edge - the edge of every shell is carefully sanded to a smooth jag free surface. Ideal for working narrow areas the edge is also valuable as a contouring tool. Using two shells at a 45 degree angle works especially well for wringing and draining.
Your therapist will begin the treatment, using the shells on your arms, legs, neck back and shoulders. The application of hot Lava Shells will act to dilate blood vessels therefore increasing blood flow. Increased blood supply will bring fresh oxygen and nutrients to the area and assist in the removal of waste products.

Lava shells will never be used before the therapist has tested the temperature. They will also never be placed on your body and left, there will always be continuous movement of the Lava Shells during the massage.
